The KETO Diet

Keto diet is a high fat, moderate protein, low carb diet. This diet aims to force your body into using a different type of fuel. Instead of relying on sugar (glucose) that comes from carbohydrates (such as grains, legumes, vegetables, and fruits), the keto diet relies on ketone bodies, a type of fuel that the liver produces from stored fat. Despite the recent hype, a ketogenic diet is not something new. In medicine, it has been used for long to treat drug-resistant epilepsy, especially in children. Keto diet was firstly used as a therapeutic diet for some medical conditions. Later people started using it for weight loss. Because it is so restrictive, it is really hard to follow over the long run. Some patients may feel a little tired in the beginning once they follow this diet, while some may have bad breath, nausea, vomiting, constipation, and sleep problems. Keto diet lack evidence on long term effect, that’s why we are not promoting or offering it to our patients in the hospital. Instead of engaging in the next popular diet that would last only a few weeks to months (for most people that includes a ketogenic diet), try to embrace change that is sustainable over the long term.

A balanced, unprocessed diet, rich in very colorful fruits and vegetables, lean meats, fish, whole grains, nuts, seeds, olive oil, and lots of water seems to have the best evidence for a long, healthier, vibrant life.
