Navigating the cancer Journey
published on: 14th february, 2022The diagnosis of cancer can cause psychological and physical trauma. It is possible to feel a variety of complex emotions, such as disbelief, fear and anger. However, discovering your cancer treatment options, reading more about the journey and constantly following up with your physician will help you feel more in control.
It is important to know that different physicians will be involved in managing the cancer, once you are diagnosed, you will probably meet the below multidisciplinary team who shall guide you through:
- Medical oncologist
- Surgeon
- Radiation technician
- Dietitian
- Oncology nurse
Manage stress
Anxiety and stress are common responses to cancer diagnosis, yet stress can weaken your immune system and make it harder for you to stay healthy.
Here are few tips to handle your stress effectively
- Relax by doing something you enjoy.
- Organize your thoughts by keeping a journal.
- Consider meditating or practicing yoga.
- Make sure you get enough sleep.
- Discover a new hobby.
- Breathe deeply.
- Exercise regularly.
Ask for help
A request for help does not mean you are failing, dependent, or incapable. In challenging times, it is important to recognize when help is needed and to feel comfortable seeking it. It means we are brave and wise enough to acknowledge our limitations.
It is in your best interest to keep a network of supportive people to maintain good health. Studies have compared people with cancer who had the most and least social support. Those with the most social support had better quality of life and lived longer.
Join a support group
A support group allows you to share your feelings and challenges in a comfortable environment where you will be supported, you will learn more on practical information and treatment options of others as it will reduce your stress and feelings of helplessness.
